The Joseph Groh Foundation is a wonderful organization that gives financial support to people in the construction trade who endured life-altering injuries. Once a year the Foundation honors multiple recipients with a grant and this year the Joseph Groh Foundation was excited to present Adil Karamally as a recipient.
Adil, born in Pakistan, obtained his MBA from the University of Chicago and 13 years ago purchased ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and earned his HVAC and general contracting license. Three years ago, Adil experienced a severe stroke at the young age of 48. He lost the ability to use his left arm and it left his left leg greatly impaired, resulting in foot drop. Only able to walk with a heavy brace, his muscles began to atrophy and his doctors were concerned that he would most likely become permanently in a wheelchair.
Unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their only source of income, resulting in financial stress on the couple with a young child in elementary and three more children in college. They became optimistic when Adil was a good candidate for the WalkAid System, a device that utilizes functional electrical stimulation to help a person with Adil’s condition walk again. Unfortunately, Adil and Laila were not able to afford the WalkAid System in addition to the comprehensive rehab that would be required so he could understand how to use it.
Thankfully, a specialist at WalkAid directed the couple to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, due to the incredible grant, Adil obtained the WalkAid System and has already experienced wonderful success. His muscle is no longer indicating atrophy and is actually starting to regenerate, bringing optimism back to Adil and Laila.
